Assam destroys narcotics worth Rs 472.51 crore in major anti-drug drive

The Assam government on July 12, scientifically destroyed narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances worth an estimated Rs 472.51 crore during a state-level drug disposal programme, reinforcing its ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking and substance abuse.
 

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the programme as the chief guest and supervised the destruction of the seized contraband. Ministers Jayanta Malla Baruah and Narayan Deka were also present.
 

The drugs, seized in various cases across the state, were scientifically destroyed to ensure they do not re-enter the illegal market.
 

The contraband destroyed included 39.068 kg of morphine (estimated value: Rs 39.07 crore), 79.770 kg of opium (Rs 3.98 crore), 0.0471 kg of cocaine (Rs 23.55 lakh), 19,02,922 Yaba tablets (Rs 79.64 crore), 58.877 kg of heroin (Rs 117.75 crore), 9.49 kg of poppy straw (Rs 1.43 lakh), 2,29,449 bottles of cough syrup (Rs 22.94 crore), and 37,796.34 kg of ganja (cannabis) valued at Rs 188.98 crore.
 

The total estimated market value of the narcotic substances destroyed was Rs 472.51 crore.
 

The state government said the disposal programme reflects Assam's continued commitment to eliminating the menace of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. By scientifically destroying the seized contraband, the government aims to prevent its re-entry into circulation while strengthening its anti-narcotics campaign and advancing its goal of building a drug-free Assam.
