Assam: Dhemaji Court sentences Rintu Sharma to death in 2021 Nandita Saikia murder case

In a landmark judgment, the Dhemaji District and Sessions Court on Thursday awarded the death penalty to Rintu Sharma for the brutal murder of college student Nandita Saikia.

Nandita, a student of Moridhal College, was killed on August 21, 2021, in a horrifying incident that also left her classmate, Kashmina Dutta, and Kashmina’s father, Deba Dutta, grievously injured after being attacked by the convict.

The case, registered at Dhemaji Police Station as Case No. 397/2021, underwent an extensive four-year trial. During this period, 41 witnesses provided their testimonies before the court. After a thorough examination of the evidence and depositions, the Sessions Court found Sharma guilty under Sections 342, 326, 307, and 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Police had earlier filed a detailed 400-page chargesheet against the accused. The verdict, which pronounced the death sentence on Thursday, marks the culmination of a long and painful pursuit of justice for Nandita’s family and the survivors.
