Assam: Dhubri AGP office sealed amid internal party dispute, official committee alleges illegal takeover attempt
A major internal dispute within the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) surfaced in Dhubri after the party’s district headquarters was allegedly locked and sealed by a breakaway faction, triggering tensions and disrupting organisational activities.
The existing and officially recognised committee of the AGP Dhubri Bidhan Parishad, whose tenure remains valid until 2027, condemned the incident and described the action as an unlawful interference in party functioning.
According to Dilip Sarkar, President of the AGP Dhubri Bidhan Parishad, the dispute arose following the activities of a parallel committee allegedly formed by Harun Islam, former Vice President of the official district unit. Sarkar claimed that the newly formed faction lacks formal recognition from the party leadership.
As per the allegations, the faction led by Islam announced on Sunday that members of the recognised committee would not be permitted to access the district office and subsequently placed a lock and chain on the main entrance.
The impact of the development became evident on Monday morning when AGP Dhubri Zilla Youth Wing President Sanjay Biswas arrived at the office to conduct a scheduled organisational meeting. However, party workers reportedly found the premises inaccessible and alleged that control of the office keys had been taken over by members aligned with the rival faction.
Reacting to the development, Biswas termed the incident a violation of party discipline and called for immediate intervention from the state leadership.
“We urge State AGP President Atul Bora to initiate a high-level inquiry into the unauthorised lockout and take necessary action against those responsible,” Biswas said.
The incident has heightened tensions among local party workers, while district leaders are awaiting guidance from the party’s central leadership in Guwahati to resolve the standoff and restore normal functioning at the district office.
No official response from Harun Islam’s faction was available at the time of filing this report.
