Assam: Dhubri college organises street play ‘Kanyaratna’ highlighting child marriage and gender equality

The Women’s Cell and Women’s Forum of Dhubri Bholanath College organized a street play titled ‘Kanyaratna’ on Wednesday, March 12 within the college premises.

The play, staged in observance of International Women’s Day (March 8, 2025), was written and directed by Dr. Polly Bezbaruah, Assistant Professor of Assamese at Bholanath College. Performed by college students, the cast included Rajdeep Saha, Sehreen Jerrik, Naseem Ullah, Alam, Piyush Pal, Kakoli Roy, Kakli Karmakar, Rumima Sultana, Banshri Dey, Swarif Ahmed, and Dipjyoti Roy. Their powerful performance resonated with the audience, who applauded the initiative as a meaningful step toward social change.

Alongside the street play, the Women’s Cell and Women’s Forum hosted a felicitation program to honor two distinguished women from Dhubri district for their outstanding contributions to society and women’s empowerment. The awardees were Iramani Bora, a respected content creator, and Rita Das, a prominent entrepreneur.

The event was presided over by Rita Borah, Vice-Principal of Bholanath College and President of the Teachers' Wing. The college’s Principal, Dr. Kishore Kumar Saha, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Moushumi Das, Coordinator of the Women’s Forum and Head of the Chemistry Department, elaborated on the event’s objectives.

During the session, Iramani Bora and Rita Das shared their experiences, inspiring students and faculty to contribute to societal progress. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Nabami Basumatary, Associate Professor, Department of Botany. With active participation from professors, staff, and around 200 students from various departments, the event was hailed as a resounding success, reinforcing the college’s commitment to social awareness and women’s empowerment.
