Assam: Dhubri Congress submit memorandum to Governor, highlight pressing issues
Assam's Dhubri District Congress Committee, accompanied with citizens of the state, have submitted a memorandum to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya urging his intervention on three pressing matters.
The memorandum was submitted through district administration on key issues:
- Adani Group's alleged fraudulent activities
- Ongoing crisis in Manipur
- Contentious installation of smart meters in Assam
The memorandum raised serious concerns about recent indictments by the U.S. Department of Justice against Gautam Adani and his associates. The allegations include corruption, bribery, money laundering, and market manipulation, which the Congress stated have tarnished India's business reputation globally.
It also criticised the Indian government for avoiding parliamentary discussions on the matter, claiming this reflects a lack of accountability and responsibility.
The memorandum highlighted the dire situation in Manipur, where continuous violence, curfews, and lawlessness have led to numerous deaths and widespread uncertainty.
The Congress accused the BJP-led government at both state and central levels of failing to address the crisis effectively. The prime minister's absence from the state and the Chief Minister's continued tenure were described as signs of indifference toward the plight of Manipur's citizens.
Addressing the smart meter issue in Assam, the Congress alleged that the devices are unaffordable for common citizens. The memorandum pointed out that other states, such as Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, and Uttarakhand, have refrained from installing smart meters in rural areas. The Congress urged the Governor to intervene, citing the financial struggles of Assam's people.
The memorandum also condemned the police's actions during a peaceful protest rally organised by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on December 18, 2024, outside Raj Bhavan. The Congress accused the police of using excessive and indiscriminate tear gas, affecting elderly people, children, and those with respiratory conditions.
The memorandum also highlighted the tragic death of Advocate Mridul Islam, who was allegedly assaulted by authorities during the protest. Describing the incident as a "homicidal death amounting to murder", the Congress demanded accountability and justice for the deceased.
The Dhubri District Congress Committee urged the Governor to take swift action on these critical issues to ensure justice, accountability, and relief for the affected citizens.
