A 28-year-old woman from Assam's Dhubri, exposed an alleged nexus linked to a Bangladeshi Tantric, leading to the detention of four individuals on Sunday, August 31 with the assistance of local residents.
According to the woman Laly Khatun, the incident first unfolded on August 25, when a woman named Sabina Yasmin, a resident of Iddgah Math, summoned her to a residence on AMCo Road. Upon arrival, Khatun encountered a man who unexpectedly measured her height with a thread before offering her Rs 1 crore. The group reportedly sought a woman measuring six feet in height criteria Khatun happened to meet. She, however, flatly rejected the offer and returned home.
The matter escalated on August 31, when Nur Islam, a resident of Matirchar, appeared at Khatun’s residence on Charman Road, Ward No. 4. He allegedly proposed a Rs 20 lakh settlement in exchange for allowing a Tantric from Bangladesh to confirm her height with a measuring tape.
Demonstrating remarkable courage, Khatun detained Islam on the spot and compelled him to call his associates. Soon after, Islam’s wife Sona Khatun arrived with two others — Abdur Rahman Mondal of Baghmara and Abdul Safur Sheikh of Silairpar.
Khatun quickly alerted local residents, who helped her detain all the suspects until police reached the scene. Authorities later took the four individuals, along with a minor, into custody.
The revelations have sparked widespread alarm in Dhubri, shedding light on the persistence of such exploitative and superstitious practices that prey on vulnerable individuals. Police sources confirmed that investigations are underway to ascertain the role of the alleged Bangladeshi Tantric and uncover the full extent of the nexus.
