Assam: Dibrugarh civic body launches eviction drive against roadside encroachments

The Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) on June 7, carried out a large-scale eviction drive against encroachments in various parts of the town after the deadline issued to unauthorised occupants and vendors to vacate public spaces expired.
 

Officials said notices had been served earlier to illegal occupants and business operators, directing them to clear encroached areas. Following the expiry of the notice period, municipal authorities launched the eviction operation to remove structures and establishments occupying public land.
 

The civic body clarified that street vending is permitted in Dibrugarh, but expressed concern over vendors occupying footpaths and roadside spaces, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience for pedestrians and commuters.
 

According to officials, the Municipal Corporation has already allotted designated Vending Zones (VZs) at different locations in the town to accommodate street vendors. However, several vendors have allegedly continued to operate from footpaths and busy commercial areas instead of the allotted spaces.
 

Residents have long complained about the occupation of pedestrian pathways and public spaces in the town centre, alleging that the encroachments have caused inconvenience and disrupted the movement of both vehicles and pedestrians.
 

As part of the drive, the Municipal Corporation removed temporary shops, unauthorised business establishments and other structures allegedly encroaching on roadsides and public land across the town.
