Assam: Dibrugarh jail superintendent charged under UAPA and Assam Prison Act, says SP Reddy

The Dibrugarh Police have apprehended the Superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail following the recovery of contraband items from the custody of a detainee Amritpal Singh.

SP VV Rakesh Reddy in a press briefing spoke on the sequence of events leading to the superintendent's arrest. He disclosed that a thorough search operation within the jail premises unearthed illicit items including mobile phones equipped with remote keypads and other communication devices.

Prompted by these findings, the police initiated a comprehensive investigation, delving into the nexus between jail officials, particularly the superintendent and detainees involved in unlawful activities. Subsequent inquiries revealed compelling evidence implicating the superintendent in facilitating these illicit operations compelling the authorities to take  action.

Reddy stated the gravity of the situation stating the potential threat posed by such activities, especially considering the presence of National Security Act (NSA) detainees within the jail. The superintendent's alleged complicity in breaching jail protocols and aiding unlawful endeavors raised serious concerns regarding the maintenance of law and order and national security.

Regarding the legal aspects of the case, Reddy disclosed that a case, numbered 84/24, has been registered under relevant sections, including 120B, Section 13(1)(b) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and Section 75 of the Assam Prison Act.

Responding to queries about the ongoing investigation, Reddy affirmed that the police would leave no stone unturned in unraveling the extent of communication between the detainees and external entities. He assured that forensic analyses and other investigative measures would be employed to ascertain the full scope of the superintendent's involvement and the breadth of the unlawful activities.

Additionally, Reddy addressed concerns about the welfare of the detainees, confirming that those on hunger strike were under regular medical supervision, with necessary actions taken to address any health issues. He reiterated the commitment of the authorities to uphold the rule of law while ensuring the safety and well-being of all inmates.
