Assam: Discontent among BJP workers over candidate selection in Silchar Ward 41
Discontent has surfaced among BJP workers and supporters in Ward No. 41 of Silchar following the announcement of the party’s candidates for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election.
At a press conference on Wednesday, September 9, party workers and supporters alleged that local aspirants from Ward 41 had been overlooked and that the BJP ticket had instead been given to a person from neighbouring Ward 40.
The workers claimed that several local contenders had been working with residents of the ward for years and had provided assistance during various crises, including the floods and the COVID-19 pandemic.
They said they would not support the party’s nominated candidate and announced plans to field an independent candidate from Ward 41.
The development comes as political parties step up preparations for the Silchar civic polls.
Meanwhile, some local voters said party affiliation alone would not determine their choice. They said the candidate’s public outreach, identity and work for residents would also be important factors in deciding whom to support.
