Assam: Drug peddler injured in police encounter at Barpeta’s Mailkuchi

A suspected drug trafficker was injured in a police encounter at Mailkuchi village in Assam’s Barpeta district in the early hours of Sunday morning, November 16.

According to police sources, Barpeta Police opened fire targeting a drug mafia member after he attempted to escape from custody. The injured has been identified as Anowar Hussain of Mailkuchi village.

The incident took place at around 2 am on Sunday.

Earlier, on November 6, Tarabari Police had seized 11 soap cases filled with suspected heroin from an Alto vehicle. The drug supply team abandoned the vehicle and fled during the operation.

On Saturday night, based on allegations of involvement in the same drug trafficking network, Tarabari Police detained Anowar Hussain. He was being taken along by the police to locate and recover additional narcotics.
However, during the operation he allegedly pushed the police personnel and attempted to flee. In response, police fired at him, injuring him in the left thigh.

Anowar Hussain is currently undergoing treatment at Barpeta Medical College and Hospital.

Barpeta Superintendent of Police Sushanta Biswas Sharma, Additional SP (Crime) Bidyut Bikash Bora Bhuyan, and Sadar DSP Jitesh Barman visited the spot and initiated an investigation into the incident.
