Assam: Education minister Ranoj Pegu orders review of low attendance in Government schools

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has directed a review of student attendance in government schools, citing concerns over low turnout. The order comes amid reports that while 50 lakh students are enrolled in government schools, only 1.5 lakh students are studying in private institutions.

Speaking at a meeting with education department officials at the district commissioner's conference hall in Sri Bhoomi, Pegu stressed the importance of improving quality in government schools rather than focusing solely on infrastructure. "It is not our job to build or rebuild schools. Our goal is to enhance the quality of education in government institutions," he stated.

Officials have been asked to analyze attendance patterns and identify underlying issues contributing to low participation. This move is expected to shape policy decisions aimed at ensuring better engagement among students.

Additionally, the minister addressed the school uniform procurement scam, where allegations of negligence have allowed contractors to benefit unfairly. To tackle the issue, he announced that contractors will only receive payments after lab tests confirm uniform quality.

The Assam government has been under pressure to reform the public education sector, and these recent directives signal an intensified focus on accountability and quality assurance.
