In a continued crackdown on illegal immigration, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at New Bongaigaon Railway Station arrested eight individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals.
The detentions took place while an ongoing investigation was underway against previously identified illegal entrants in the area.
According to police sources, the individuals were intercepted based on suspicious movement and lack of valid travel documents.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the group had illegally entered Assam through the India-Bangladesh border via Meghalaya.
The detainees have been identified as:
1. Babu Sheikh
2. Ashraful Haque
3. Alamin Ali
4. Mamun Sheikh
5. Mohammad Ali
6. Ruhul Amin
7. Musharraf Ali
8. Asharul Haque
Authorities are currently conducting further verification of their identities and immigration status. Legal proceedings under the Foreigners Act have been initiated, and the individuals are being held in custody for interrogation.
Security agencies are also probing the possible involvement of human trafficking networks facilitating illegal cross-border movement. Coordination with border authorities in Meghalaya is underway to trace the infiltration route.
The GRP has heightened surveillance across key railway stations in the region in response to recurring cases of illegal entry.
