Assam: Election violence erupts in Tezpur as congress leader attacked by alleged BJP supporters

The District Congress President,Tezpur, Dadul Bokotoky fell victim to an alleged assault by individuals purportedly affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tezpur.

The incident unfolded in the newly established north ward constituency, previously part of the Sootea constituency but now encompassing Lalatapur village 4. This area has been at the center of attention due to its COVID-19 center and longstanding infrastructural issues. Members of the Congress party including President Bokotoky had visited the area around 4 pm to engage with local residents.

According to Bokotoky, approximately 10 BJP supporters arrived on bikes and began chanting divisive slogans, igniting tensions. Despite efforts to defuse the situation and uphold the democratic process, the confrontation escalated as BJP supporters allegedly targeted Bokotoky, hurling a large stone at his car and assaulting him.

The BJP workers, however, refute these claims, asserting that they were the ones attacked by the Congress team. They allege that the incident occurred on their way back from Shirovani no. 4 when a group of Congress members, including President Barkatki, instigated the violence.

In the midst of conflicting narratives, law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain the sequence of events and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Expressing concern over the incident, local residents and political observers have called for restraint and emphasized the need for peaceful electoral processes. "Election-related violence has no place in our democratic fabric," remarked a concerned citizen.
