Assam: Elephant herd destroys household in Boko’s Singra, consume quintals of paddy

A herd of wild elephants wreaked havoc in Singra under Boko late Monday, September 9 night, damaging property and consuming a significant amount of food grains.


The incident occurred at the residence of Mahendra Talukdar around 2 a.m., when the elephants barged into the household granary. According to reports, the herd devoured nearly 4 quintals of paddy and over 2 quintals of rice, in addition to wrecking household items, including utensils and other belongings.


Local residents said the elephants had strayed into the settlement from the nearby forest in search of food. The sudden intrusion left the family and neighbours in panic as the animals rampaged through the premises.


Forest department officials arrived at the site on Tuesday morning to assess the damage and assured necessary steps to address the situation.


Incidents of wild elephants entering human habitation have become a recurring issue in the area, with locals expressing concern over the increasing threat to life and property. Residents have urged the authorities to take long-term measures to prevent further conflicts.
