Assam: Elephant herd on the move through Kheroni villages, residents fear crop damage

A herd of wild elephants has been roaming through villages and agricultural areas in Kheroni under the Southern Forest Range of Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district for several days, causing concern among local residents.
 

The elephants have been moving through farmlands and nearby villages, raising fears among farmers over possible damage to standing crops and property.
 

Residents under the Kheroni Police Station jurisdiction said the movement of the herd has disrupted normal activities, particularly during the evening and early morning hours.
 

The area has witnessed recurring instances of human-elephant conflict, particularly in villages located close to forested areas. The latest movement of the herd has once again heightened concerns among villagers.
 

Residents have appealed to the forest authorities to take prompt measures to guide the elephants back towards forested areas and strengthen preventive measures to protect crops and ensure the safety of people.
 

Villagers have also urged authorities to closely monitor the herd’s movement to prevent any untoward incident.
