Assam entrepreneur revolutionises fertiliser production in Dhubri

A young entrepreneur from Assam's Dhubri district, Shahidur Rahman, has carved a niche for himself in the agricultural industry by producing organic fertilisers at a time when chemical alternatives dominate the market.

His journey from running a small shop to establishing a successful organic fertiliser factory has not only made him self-reliant but also turned him into an inspiration for many educated youth in the region.

Hailing from Gauripur town, Shahidur initially ran a shop to sustain his livelihood. However, the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 forced him to shut his business. Instead of giving up, Rahman used the time to educate himself on organic fertiliser production.

He extensively studied vermicomposting—where organic matter is decomposed with the help of earthworms—through YouTube tutorials. Armed with this knowledge, he began experimenting with vermicomposting in his own home, using the fertiliser to grow vegetables in his backyard.

His efforts soon yielded positive results, attracting the attention of local farmers and residents. Encouraged by this initial success, Rahman gradually expanded his production, eventually establishing a full-fledged organic fertilizer factory named Rashmi Organic Vermi Compost Farm, where people from different parts of Dhubri district visit his facility to purchase organic fertilisers.

Recognising his dedication and contribution to sustainable agriculture, the Dhubri District Agriculture Department extended support in various ways.

Additionally, Rahman received financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh under the Chief Minister’s Atma Nirbhar Assam Abhiyan, which played a crucial role in expanding his production capacity.

Rahman credits Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his role model, stating that he was inspired by the PM’s call to promote organic farming and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. Responding to this appeal, he has dedicated himself to the production of organic fertilisers, ensuring that farmers have access to a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative.

His initiative has not only benefited the environment but has also provided employment opportunities to locals.
