Assam: Eviction drive conducted against encroachers in Nellie area of Jagiroad

The district administration carried out an eviction drive against alleged encroachers in the Nellie area of Jagiroad in Assam’s Morigaon district on March 12.

The eviction was conducted on land belonging to the Amsoi Tea Estate, where several families had reportedly been residing illegally for years. In the first phase of the operation, around 25 families were evicted from the encroached land.

A large team comprising officials from the Morigaon district administration and personnel of Assam Police carried out the drive.
According to officials, nearly 600 bighas of land under the Palahguri Tribal Belt and Block are currently under alleged illegal encroachment. Authorities said some suspected individuals had been living on the land.

Several organisations, including the All Tiwa Students’ Union, had been demanding eviction of the encroachers from the area for a long time.

Acting on these demands, the administration launched the eviction drive on Thursday, removing about 25 families in the first phase. Officials said further action may be taken in the coming days.

No untoward incident was reported during the operation, and the situation remained peaceful throughout the eviction process.
