The Jorhat Police have arrested two individuals who had been allegedly posing as qualified doctors and practicing medicine for several years under false pretenses in the heart of the city.
Identified as Ashok Kumar Gogoi and Amar Jyoti Nath, the duo had been running a private chamber on Old Abart Bhawan Road, a busy and central location in Jorhat, raising serious questions about regulatory oversight. Locals had begun referring to them as the "Munna Bhai duo", a reference to the popular Bollywood character known for impersonating a doctor.
According to officials, Ashok Kumar Gogoi had initially operated a homeopathy clinic at the same location. Over time, he shifted to practicing allopathic medicine without any valid qualifications. His associate, Amar Jyoti Nath, similarly posed as a medicine specialist, falsely presenting himself as a certified MBBS doctor.
The fraud came to light after several medical representatives (MRs) raised red flags over inconsistencies in prescriptions and treatment practices. Their suspicions prompted a complaint to the Joint Director of the Health Department, who subsequently launched an inquiry.
Upon verification, the Health Department issued an official notice, ordering the immediate closure of the unauthorized medical chamber. Jorhat Police arrested both individuals on the same night, charging them under relevant sections for impersonation and illegal medical practice.
