Assam: Family cries foul after youth dies four days into de-addiction treatment in Tinsukia

In yet another disturbing incident, a 30-year-old man identified as Papu Das has reportedly died under suspicious circumstances at the New Life Wisdom Foundation de-addiction centre located in Bahbari village, Tinsukia.

According to reports, Papu Das’s health deteriorated late last night, following which he was rushed to the Tinsukia Civil Hospital. However, doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival. Family members have alleged that despite his worsening condition, the centre authorities failed to inform them in time.

Relatives of the deceased claim that Papu had been admitted to the facility merely four days ago, hoping to recover from substance addiction. His sudden demise has left the family in deep shock, and they have expressed strong suspicion regarding the cause of death.

Local residents have raised serious concerns about the growing number of such incidents in Assam’s privately-run de-addiction centres. While these centres are intended to rehabilitate individuals battling addiction, many have allegedly turned into profit-driven ventures operating with minimal oversight.

Reports suggest that several of these facilities function without proper regulation or medical supervision, raising questions about their safety standards. Despite repeated occurrences of deaths and abuse allegations, government and district authorities are yet to take stringent action to monitor or regulate their operations.
