Assam: Farmer trampled to death in elephant attack at Balijan Dirok tea estate

A farmer lost his life after being attacked by a wild elephant at a paddy field in Balijan Dirok Tea Estate under the Margherita West Range office of Digboi Forest Division.

According to officials, the incident occurred around 1:30 am on December 9, when the victim and his brother had gone to their paddy field to inspect the area. 

The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Ghuron Lakra, who succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, December 10, at his residence.

His body was sent today to Tinsukia Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Sources in the Forest Department stated that an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh will be provided to the next of kin as per government norms. 

The department is also assessing the circumstances of the incident as part of the standard procedure in human-elephant conflict cases.
