Hundreds of farmers in Assam’s Hajo region staged a road blockade on Monday, protesting against the alleged sale of fake paddy seeds. The agitated farmers, visibly distressed, marched onto the Hajo-Nalbari road clutching clumps of barren crops — a symbol of their failed harvest.
The seeds in question were purchased from the Pradhan Mantri Krishak Sambriddhi Kendra located in Bullut, Hajo, reportedly run by one Ahmed Hussain. According to the farmers, the seeds were sold at inflated prices, higher than the government’s fixed rate. These were intended for Boro paddy cultivation, a critical seasonal crop in the region.
Despite enduring numerous financial and climatic challenges, the farmers planted the seeds across thousands of bighas. However, to their dismay, the fields yielded patan — non-fruitful, barren plants — instead of healthy paddy crops.
Realizing they had been deceived, over a hundred affected farmers mobilized to gherao the agriculture supply center. The proprietor, Ahmed Hussain (also referred to as Ahmed Ali in some accounts), allegedly fled the area ahead of the farmers' arrival.
Left with no other recourse, the farmers blocked key roadways, demanding immediate justice and financial compensation for their losses. They have issued a stern warning, stating that if their grievances are not addressed swiftly, they will escalate the agitation further.
