Assam: Father alleges torture of son at Nagaon's Jamuguri de-addiction centre

Serious allegations of physical and mental abuse have been levelled against a de-addiction centre in Jamuguri, under Juria in Assam’s Nagaon district, with a father claiming that his son was subjected to torture instead of receiving treatment.

The allegations have been made against Jonaki Jibon Path Foundation, a de-addiction centre where a young man from Bhuyanbari village in Lahorighat was admitted to help him overcome substance addiction.

According to the father, Kaddus Ali, a farmer from Bhuyanbari, he had sought police assistance to help his son recover from addiction. Lahorighat Police subsequently arranged for the young man to be admitted to the centre in Jamuguri.

However, Ali has alleged that his son faced physical and mental abuse at the facility instead of receiving appropriate treatment. He has raised serious allegations against the centre’s proprietors, Ilias Ansari and Injamul Ansari.

The father has submitted a written complaint at Juria Police Station, seeking the recovery of his son and action in connection with the allegations.

It has also been alleged that complaints of abuse had previously been raised against the centre. However, further details regarding the earlier allegations were not immediately available.

The allegations are yet to be independently verified. The police response and any action taken following the complaint are awaited.

The incident has raised concerns over the treatment and safety of people admitted to de-addiction facilities, where patients are expected to receive appropriate care and support during recovery.
