Assam: Fear grips Kaliabor's Bamuni as elephants camp near residential area, causes panic among locals

Fear and anxiety have gripped residents of Kaliabor following the daytime presence of a large herd of wild elephants near human habitation. The herd was spotted near a cremation ground located close to the residential area of Bamuni, raising serious safety concerns among locals.

Official sources said the herd, consisting of approximately 20 to 30 elephants, continues to remain in the area, heightening the risk of human-elephant conflict. The elephants are believed to have descended from the Karbi hills during the night in search of food before moving into the nearby locality.

The prolonged stay of the elephants in close proximity to residential zones has left residents living in fear, with many restricting movement and urging authorities to take swift action.

In response, forest department personnel, assisted by police teams, have been deployed to the site and are making sustained efforts to safely drive the herd back into the forest. Officials said monitoring is ongoing and necessary precautions are being taken to prevent any untoward incidents.
