Assam: Five detained after anti-drug drive turns violent in Nagaon's Herapati village
A police crackdown has been launched after an anti-drug campaign by villagers allegedly turned into vandalism and looting in Herapati village of Assam's Nagaon.
According to reports, residents of Herapati carried out a large-scale action against suspected drug peddlers and drug users in the village, during which at least eight houses were allegedly vandalised. Furniture and household items were also reportedly damaged and set on fire.
However, allegations have now surfaced that some individuals involved in the operation went beyond targeting the properties and allegedly looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables from the houses.
Speaking to the media, local residents claimed that members of the group were carrying knives and other sharp weapons, creating fear among villagers. Neighbours alleged that they attempted to stop the mob from vandalising the houses but were unable to control the situation.
Locals further stated that one of the suspected drug peddlers no longer resides in the village and is currently living in the Chalchali area of Nagaon, though his family home remains in Herapati.
Taking cognisance of the incident, Nagaon Police on June 4 detained five persons for allegedly taking the law into their own hands. Police have launched an investigation into the vandalism, arson and alleged looting.
Authorities have urged residents not to resort to vigilantism and reiterated that action against drug-related activities must be carried out through legal channels.
Further investigation is underway.
