Assam: Floods submerge villages near Raimona National Park in Gossaigaon

Rising waters from the Janali River, swollen by heavy inflow from Bhutan, have flooded the Mathambill area of Gossaigaon, submerging multiple villages and creating widespread distress.

The worst-affected areas include Ballamjhora, Janali, Raimona, and Mathambill villages, all located near the boundary of Raimona National Park.

Residents report severe hardships, with homes, farmlands, and roads inundated. People, along with domestic animals and local wildlife, are struggling with shortages of food and safe shelter.

Local authorities and departmental officials have reached the affected sites to assess the situation and coordinate relief measures. Emergency services are expected to focus on providing food, medical aid, and relocation for those displaced.

The Janali River, which flows down from Bhutan, often swells during the monsoon season, but residents say this year’s flooding has been particularly intense.

Many families have had to evacuate to higher ground, while others remain trapped in waterlogged areas awaiting assistance.
