Assam football icon Durga Boro retires, ending landmark career in Indian football

National footballer Durga Boro officially hung up his boots Saturday, ending a distinguished career that saw him represent India across multiple tournaments, including the Indian Super League and Subroto Cup.

The Kokrajhar SAI Stadium transformed into a celebration venue as hundreds of fans, officials, and fellow players gathered for an elaborate farewell ceremony organised jointly by the Bodoland Territorial Council Government and the Assam Football Association.

Boro's retirement represents the conclusion of a significant chapter in northeastern Indian football. His journey from regional leagues to national recognition has established him as one of Assam's most prominent sporting ambassadors, particularly inspiring young players from the Bodoland region.

The evening's centrepiece featured an exhibition match between Assam Eleven FC and Bodoland FC, where Boro made his final appearance on the pitch. Playing alongside longtime teammates and friends, the veteran footballer delivered an emotional performance that encapsulated years of dedication to the sport.

Member of Parliament Jayanta Basumatary led the tributes, joined by local MLA Lawrence Islary and Assam Football Association Secretary Sangrang Brahma. Each speaker emphasised Boro's impact beyond statistics, highlighting his role in elevating football's profile across the region.

"Football has been my passion, my life. I am grateful for all the love and support over the years. This moment is emotional, but I retire with pride and joy," Boro said during the ceremony.

MP Basumatary praised the footballer's broader influence: "Durga Boro has made Assam and the Bodoland region proud. His dedication to football has inspired countless youth, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavours."

Assam Football Association's Sangrang Brahma reflected on the significance of the moment: "Durga Boro's retirement marks the end of an era in regional and national football, but his legacy is sure to inspire the next generation of athletes."

The ceremony underlined football's growing importance in Assam's sporting landscape, with Boro's career serving as a blueprint for aspiring players from smaller towns and tribal regions seeking national recognition.

Officials indicated that discussions are underway regarding Boro's potential involvement in youth development programmes, ensuring his expertise remains within the football ecosystem even after his playing days have concluded.
