Assam Forest Department dismantles illegal timber market in Bongaigaon’s Jogighopa, Timber worth lakhs seized

The Forest Department, in coordination with the police, carried out a major operation in the Jogighopa area of Bongaigaon district on December 29, dismantling an illegal timber market operating at the Kabaitari weekly market.

The large-scale raid was led by Abhayapuri Sub-Divisional Officer Shantakarki Chhetri and Bongaigaon Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Khanindra Kalita. A sizeable team of Forest Department officials participated in the operation.

During the raid, the authorities seized large quantities of valuable timber, estimated to be worth several lakhs of rupees. Officials said the timber was being sold illegally and without valid permits.

Sources in the Forest Department said the illegal timber trade had been operating openly at the Kabaitari weekly market for a long time. Acting on specific inputs, the department carried out a sudden operation, catching the traders off guard.

The Forest Department completely dismantled the illegal timber market during the operation. However, the traders involved reportedly fled the spot before they could be apprehended.

Further investigation is underway to identify those involved in the illegal trade, and legal action will be initiated as per forest and wildlife protection laws, officials said.
