Assam: Former MLA Ali Akbar Mian arrested over alleged offensive remarks against Assam CM

Former MLA Ali Akbar Mian was arrested by Assam Police in Dhubri following alleged provocative and threatening remarks on social media, directed at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state law enforcement authorities ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Adha festival.

According to sources, a large contingent of police personnel surrounded Mian’s residence late on Friday night amid concerns over a possible law-and-order situation in the sensitive border district. After securing the area, police officials entered the premises and detained the former legislator.

Authorities subsequently shifted Mian to the Dhubri Sadar Police Station under heightened security arrangements to prevent any potential mobilisation by supporters. Senior police officials reportedly questioned him through the night.

The action followed a public statement allegedly made by Mian in connection with cattle sacrifice during Bakri Eid. In the statement, he allegedly made derogatory remarks against the Chief Minister and issued threats aimed at police personnel.

Police said a criminal case, numbered 163/2026, has been registered against the former MLA at Bilasipara Police Station under multiple sections related to hate speech, criminal intimidation, and incitement of violence against public servants.

The arrest has drawn significant political attention in Dhubri, particularly as Mian’s wife, Farida Yasmin, currently serves as the President of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad.

Senior police officials have not issued a detailed statement regarding the ongoing investigation. However, sources indicated that Mian is likely to be produced before a local court on Saturday, where police may seek his custody for further interrogation.
