Assam: Four-lane highway demand sparks shutdown in Jakhalabandha, locals begin 'black cloth protest'

The demand for critical highway infrastructure in central Assam intensified on Saturday, February 28, as the Four-Lane National Highway Construction Demand Committee relaunched its agitation, pressing for immediate construction of a four-lane national highway connecting Kaliabor Tiniali to Numaligarh.

The committee organised a renewed agitation demanding the expansion of the existing road into a four-lane national highway stretching from Kaliabor Tiniali to Numaligarh via Kuwaritol, Hatbor, and Jakhalabandha. As part of the protest, Jakhalabandha town observed a shutdown, bringing normal activities to a halt. Members of the committee staged a silent demonstration, tying black cloths over their mouths to symbolise what they termed as the “silencing” of public demands.

Protesters said the proposed four-lane highway is crucial for easing traffic congestion, improving road safety, and accelerating economic growth in the region. They argued that the route serves as a vital link for commuters, traders and transporters and has witnessed a sharp rise in vehicular movement over the years, making expansion an urgent necessity.

In a sharp political warning, the committee declared that failure to initiate construction of the four-lane highway from Kaliabor Tiniali through Kuwaritol, Hatbor and Jakhalabandha would have electoral repercussions. It cautioned that the local MLA of Kaliabor would have to “face the consequences” in the 2026 Assembly elections if the long-pending demand remains unaddressed.
