A gas leak from a pipeline owned by Oil India Limited (OIL) near Makum in Assam’s Tinsukia district has triggered serious concerns over public safety, as the leakage has reportedly continued unabated for the past three days.
The affected pipeline runs adjacent to the vital connecting route between Makum and Barekuri. Residents have expressed alarm over the strong smell of gas in the area and the absence of any immediate containment or response efforts from OIL authorities.
Despite the potential threat to nearby communities and traffic movement, the company has reportedly taken no visible steps to address the leak or issue public advisories, drawing sharp criticism from local organizations and civil society.
Taking a strong stand, the Makum Regional Students’ Union has condemned the company’s inaction and labelled it a “reckless and irresponsible” act. The Union has called for urgent intervention to stop the leakage and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
"The continuous emission of gas not only endangers the environment but also puts human lives at risk. Oil India Limited must act responsibly," said a spokesperson from the student body.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the leak or the timeframe for its resolution.
