Assam: GMC ensures elephants enjoy Diwali with unsold banana plants

In a unique initiative coinciding with the festive spirit of Diwali, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) successfully collected unsold banana plants from various locations across the city on October 31. This effort was aimed at repurposing unused banana trees, ensuring they do not go to waste while also providing a special treat for the elephants at the Assam Zoo cum Botanical Garden and the Garbhanga Reserve Forest.

On the morning of November 1, GMC staff segregated and cleaned the collected banana plants before loading them into trucks for transportation. A total of two truckloads of these nutritious plants were dispatched, ready to serve as a delightful feast for the elephants, who are a significant attraction in both locations.

In a post on their Facebook page, GMC stated, “Our elephants deserve a Diwali treat too!” This initiative not only promotes sustainability by utilizing unsold agricultural products but also enhances the well-being of the wildlife in the region.
