Assam: ‘Go back’ slogans disrupt Congress campaign rally in Dhing’s Dhupgur

A Congress election rally in Dhupguri under Dhing Assembly constituency reportedly faced protests on September 20, with a section of people raising “Go Back” slogans against Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain.

According to reports, the slogans were raised while the Congress leaders were present as part of the party’s election campaign in the area for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election. Sibamoni Bora is the Congress candidate for the October 6 bypoll.

The protesters allegedly objected to Sibamoni Bora’s presence in the area, claiming that she had not visited or undertaken sufficient work in the erstwhile Batadroba constituency during her tenure as MLA. These claims were made by the protesters and have not been independently verified.

The protesters also allegedly declared that Congress would not be allowed to enter the area and raised slogans against the party’s leaders. They further warned that similar opposition would be seen across different parts of the constituency.

The campaign programme was attended by Gaurav Gogoi, Rakibul Hussain, Wazed Ali Choudhury, Sibamoni Bora and several state and district-level Congress functionaries.

The incident comes amid an active campaign for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, where Sibamoni Bora is contesting for Congress against candidates including BJP’s Devasish Sharma and AIUDF’s Badruddin Ajmal.
