Assam: Goalpara MLA accuses BJP-AGP leaders of misusing EPIC Numbers to target genuine voters
Goalpara MLA A.K. Rashid Alam on Sunday, February 1, sought to allay public fears over the ongoing SR-related controversy, urging citizens not to panic while alleging a concerted attempt by BJP and AGP leaders to target genuine voters through misuse of the electoral complaint mechanism.
Addressing the media over Special Revision row, Rashid Alam alleged that certain leaders from the BJP and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had filed complaints seeking deletion of names of bona fide voters from the electoral rolls by allegedly misusing voter EPIC numbers. He claimed that these complaints were lodged without the knowledge or consent of some party workers, with the intent of harassing ordinary citizens.
The Goalpara legislator further alleged that a woman BJP worker had filed a complaint seeking deletion of the names of several ordinary voters, including that of the MLA’s daughter, from the voter list. However, he stated that the complaint was subsequently withdrawn.
Rashid Alam also accused some BJP–AGP leaders of misleading poor and working-class people with false inducements and using them to submit complaints aimed at removing genuine voters from the electoral rolls. Describing the practice as a deliberate attempt to intimidate voters, the MLA warned that such actions would not be tolerated.
Stressing that genuine voters must not be harassed under any pretext, Rashid Alam said legal action would be initiated against BJP and AGP workers found to have filed false or malicious complaints seeking deletion of legitimate names from the electoral rolls.
