In a swift and strategic operation, Golakganj police in Assam’s Dhubri district thwarted a cow smuggling attempt via the Gangadhar River, rescuing eight bovines and apprehending a suspected smuggler.
The move reflects a growing shift in smuggling tactics, as traffickers increasingly exploit riverine routes to bypass intensified highway surveillance.
Acting on a reliable tip-off, a police team led by Golakganj Police Station In-Charge Debajit Kalita launched an early morning operation on Tuesday. The team intercepted a mechanised boat allegedly used to transport cattle from West Bengal across the porous border to Bangladesh via riverine island areas known as chars.

The raid resulted in the arrest of Mofizul Ali Pramanik, a suspected key supplier, from Bor Saraikhola village. Simultaneously, another police unit raided Ghughumari Char in Moisa Char and seized eight smuggled cows, now in protective police custody.
Authorities believe that smugglers have adapted their strategies to avoid detection, using remote char areas near Binnachara as temporary cattle hideouts before attempting illegal border crossings.
Police said the interrogation of the arrested suspect is underway, aimed at uncovering the full extent of the smuggling network and identifying further links to the cross-border cattle trade. The Golakganj police have vowed to intensify their crackdown on such illicit activities in the region.
