Assam: Gold biscuits worth Rs 80 lakh seized at Badarpur railway station, youth arrested
The Government Railway Police (GRP) seized gold biscuits worth nearly Rs 80 lakh and arrested a youth during a routine inspection at Badarpur Railway Station in Assam’s Sribhumi district.
The recovery was made during a checking operation on board Train No. 15626 Deoghar Express at Badarpur station. Acting on suspicion, Railway Police personnel conducted a search and recovered five gold biscuits weighing a total of 584.04 grams from the possession of one Abhijit Debnath.
The accused has been identified as a resident of Hari Choudhury Para in West Tripura. According to preliminary investigation, Debnath was allegedly transporting the gold biscuits from Tripura to Guwahati.
Police officials said the seized gold is estimated to be worth approximately Rs 80 lakh in the current market. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of law, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the gold and whether the seizure is linked to a larger smuggling network.
Railway Police described the operation as a major success in their ongoing efforts to curb illegal transportation of precious metals through railway routes in the Northeast.
