Assam Minister Ashok Singhal announced a significant development in the state's efforts to provide affordable housing.
The Assam cabinet has decided to construct 1.30 lakh houses under the Chief Minister Awas Yojana (CM Awas Yojana) in rural and Gramin areas.
This initiative is designed to complement the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), targeting those who have not yet benefited from the central government's scheme.
The CM Awas Yojana aims to provide pucca houses to economically weaker sections, with the Assam government having already approved 19,10,823 houses under the scheme.
Out of these, 12,43,584 houses have been constructed, and an additional 600,000 houses are expected to be completed by February 2024. The beneficiaries for this scheme were selected based on the socio-economic caste census (SECC).

This move is part of a broader welfare initiative by the Assam Cabinet, which also includes conducting a comprehensive socio-economic assessment of Assam's indigenous minorities and renaming the Directorate of Char Areas Development to the Directorate of Minority Affairs and Char Areas.
Additionally, the state plans to enhance digital infrastructure and create libraries for children and adolescents under the 'Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2023-24'.
The construction of the CM Awas Yojana houses is a testament to the state's commitment to improving living standards and providing essential services to its rural population.
This housing initiative is expected to significantly impact the lives of many, offering them a stable and secure living environment.
