Assam government discusses 52 recommendations on Clause 6 implementation

The Assam government held its third round of discussions with the All Assam Students' Union on implementing recommendations from the Biplab Kumar Committee concerning Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

The meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, examined 52 recommendations submitted by the committee. Of these, 40 fall entirely under state jurisdiction, whilst 12 require coordination between state and central governments.

Utpal Sharma, president of the All Assam Students' Union, said the talks focused on "the doable parts" that the state government can implement independently.

"We discussed 52 recommendations of the Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee, out of which 40 recommendations fall totally under the purview of the Assam government and 12 recommendations fall under the purview of the central as well as the state governments," he stated.

Clause 6 of the 1985 Assam Accord promises constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social and linguistic identity of the Assamese people. The Biplab Kumar Committee was formed to suggest measures for implementing this provision.

The discussions mark the latest effort to address long-standing demands regarding the protection of indigenous Assamese identity, a contentious issue that has shaped the state's political landscape for decades.
