Assam government extends Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia to families of landslide victims

In the wake of the recent tragic landslide at Daimuguri, Chapaidang in Guwahati, Assam which claimed the lives of three family members, the state government has announced a one-time financial assistance package to support the bereaved families.

Mayor Mrigen Sarania, along with local MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya and MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi, personally visited the affected family at Bamunimaidam Railway Colony to hand over the one-time ex-gratia financial aid. The government will provide Rs 4 lakh each in the names of the deceased — mother Poonam Goswami, her daughter Neelakshi Goswami, and niece Ranjita Boro.

Mayor Sarania also confirmed similar assistance will be extended to the families of Trinmoy Das of Datthalpara and Rabin Boro from Jalukbari, who also lost their lives in recent landslide incidents.

Addressing the ongoing flood situation, the Mayor urged residents in hill areas to relocate temporarily to safer locations during heavy rainfall periods. He emphasized proactive measures as the city prepares for the second phase of flood management. Sixty teams, primarily composed of local youths, have been formed to provide assistance in each ward, with ongoing efforts including extensive drain cleaning to mitigate flooding risks.

Regarding the controversy surrounding the recovery of a deceased body at Rukmini Gaon, Mayor Sarania expressed regret over political dramatization of rescue efforts. He stated that boats and vehicles were ready and available, but some individuals ignored the resources, turning the matter into a political spectacle. An inquiry into the incident has been initiated to address concerns and ensure accountability.
