Assam government is compulsory to be a solar-powered building: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on March 14 a bold initiative that sets a new standard for environmental responsibility. With a commitment to combatting climate change, the Assam government has mandated that all buildings constructed under its purview must harness solar power.

"We have decided that any building built by the Assam government is compulsory to be a solar-powered building," stated Chief Minister Sarma. "By August 15, 2024, the entire Assam Secretariat will be transformed into a green haven, setting an inspiring example for the nation."

Under the banner of "institutional solar power," the state is poised to revolutionize its infrastructure, ensuring that each edifice reflects its dedication to renewable energy. Beginning April 1, the Public Works Department (PWD) will spearhead the construction of numerous solar-powered buildings across Assam, marking a significant shift towards sustainability.

Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the approach behind this initiative, noting, "As firefighting is essential, we have made it a rule in Assam that institutional solar power is now mandatory."
