Assam government permits 24/7 shop operations in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar

In a significant move aimed at boosting local businesses and employment, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that shops in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar will now be allowed to operate 24 hours a day.

Addressing the press, the CM clarified that there would be no government-imposed restrictions on the mandatory weekly off, allowing shop owners the flexibility to decide their closure days.

For towns outside the municipal corporations of Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar, shop operating hours have been extended until 2 AM, while in rural areas, establishments can remain open until 11 PM.

The initiative is designed to empower small-scale entrepreneurs and boost economic activity. However, the government has put safeguards in place to ensure worker welfare.

CM Sarma further stated that employees cannot be made to work for more than 48 hours per week or exceed 9-hour shifts at a stretch. Shops opting for 24-hour operations must function in three shifts, which is expected to generate more employment opportunities.

"This decision will not only support businesses but also create more job opportunities across the state," CM Sarma added.
