Assam Government to hand over engineer Jyoshita Das suicide case to CBI

In a significant development regarding the ongoing probe into the alleged suicide of engineer Jyoshita Das, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, July 31 announced that the state government has decided to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Addressing a press conference, CM Sarma stated, "A suicide note was recovered by the police. To ensure a thorough investigation, Assam Police constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT). The area where the incident occurred was videographed and subjected to forensic examination. So far, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case."

Highlighting the seriousness of the matter, the Chief Minister said, "Considering the gravity of the incident, where a young and talented engineer lost her life under tragic circumstances, the Assam Cabinet has resolved to transfer the case to the CBI."

He further informed that the Chief Secretary of Assam has already initiated communication with the Director of the CBI, who has agreed to take up the investigation. However, CM Sarma clarified that there will be a procedural gap of approximately 20 to 25 days before the case is formally handed over to the central agency.

“The official transfer requires the approval of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. While the state government is committed to expediting the process, we must understand that certain formalities take time,” the Chief Minister added.
