To alleviate the burden on citizens, the sale of onions at subsidized rates is being conducted across 12 distribution points in Guwahati City, Assam.
The government's intervention has effectively reduced onion prices, bringing relief to consumers. As of today, November 3, onions at Guwahati's distribution points are priced at Rs 25 per kg, in stark contrast to the retail market price of Rs 60-80 per kg.
An official explained to IndiaTodayNE, 'We are implementing this on behalf of the Government of India. The Government of India has created an onion buffer, which they do annually. They forecast soaring prices and buffer the onion supply, releasing it to the open market during lean periods. Currently, they are making it available at Rs 25 for consumers.'
He also mentioned that with support from the State government, onions are being sold at twelve locations, including Ganeshguri. The intervention is aimed at providing relief to consumers by selling onions at these locations.
