Assam Governor visits Kamakhya temple post Ambubachi Mela, prays for ‘Viksit Bharat’

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, accompanied by his wife, offered prayers at the Kamakhya Temple on Thursday morning as the sacred shrine reopened for public darshan following the conclusion of the Ambubachi Mela.

Governor Acharya joined thousands of devotees at the revered temple atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, where a sea of pilgrims had gathered for the first darshan after the annual ritualistic observance known as Nivriti — marking the end of the goddess’s symbolic menstruation period.

Speaking to the media after his visit, the Governor said,

“I prayed for the realization of Viksit Bharat and for strength to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his mission to advance India’s development. The arrangements at the temple have been well-organized to ensure smooth darshan for devotees.”

The Ambubachi Mela, one of the most spiritually significant festivals in eastern India, honours the annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, who is revered as a powerful embodiment of Shakti (divine feminine energy). The temple doors were closed on June 22 after the Prabritti rituals, symbolizing the goddess’s retreat, and reopened on June 26 for devotees to resume worship.

The four-day festival, held annually during the Assamese month of Ahaar (mid-June), attracts lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad. Recognised as a centre of Tantric practices, Kamakhya Temple is one of the oldest and most sacred of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the country.

This year’s Ambubachi Mela began on Sunday with traditional rituals and marked yet another confluence of faith, mysticism, and cultural vibrancy, as the temple complex buzzed with spiritual fervour.
