Assam: Grand Master Wanyong Lee leads Taekwondo training camp in Bodoland

A week-long Taekwondo training camp began on November 3 at the Chiknjhar Gymnasium in Bodofa Nwgwr, Kokrajhar, aiming to boost the skills of young martial artists from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Organised by the All Bodoland Taekwondo Association, the camp focuses on Kyorugi (sparring) and Poomsae (forms), offering both basic and advanced training sessions. Over fifty trainees from different districts of BTR are taking part in the programme.

The key attraction of the event is the presence of Grand Master Wanyong Lee, an 8th Dan Black Belt expert from South Korea, who is leading the sessions. This is his first visit to Bodoland.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Grand Master Lee said India holds “immense potential in martial arts,” with many young and skilled players. However, he pointed out that the country “still lags behind Korea in terms of sports infrastructure and training facilities.” He stressed the importance of creating platforms that can provide world-class coaching and international exposure for talented athletes.

Lee also expressed admiration for the Bodo community’s rich culture and warm hospitality, saying he was impressed by the region’s traditions, language, and cuisine.

Officials of the All Bodoland Taekwondo Association attended the inauguration, highlighting the camp’s goal of strengthening the foundation of Taekwondo in the region and inspiring greater youth participation in martial arts.
