Assam: Haflong's long-delayed drinking water project begins; eviction drive launched for reservoir construction
Work on the long-awaited AMRUT 2.0 drinking water project has commenced in Haflong, with the district administration carrying out an eviction drive to facilitate the construction of a reservoir aimed at addressing the town's chronic water shortage.
The eviction drive was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday, July 15 and 16, in the Lodi area, where the proposed reservoir will be built as part of the Centre-sponsored Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0.
Haflong, the headquarters of Assam's Dima Hasao district, has been grappling with drinking water scarcity for several years. Despite repeated demands from residents, a permanent solution had remained elusive.
The foundation stone for the project was laid ahead of the last elections with the objective of improving the town's drinking water supply infrastructure.
According to the district administration, the project will modernise and strengthen Haflong's water supply network, ensuring residents have access to a safe, reliable and sustainable supply of drinking water.
Officials said the initiative, being implemented under the AMRUT 2.0 Mission, is expected to significantly improve the town's civic infrastructure while contributing to better public health and quality of life.
The administration said the reservoir is a key component of the project, and the land clearance was necessary to ensure timely execution of the works.
Residents welcomed the commencement of the project, saying the eviction drive marks a significant step towards the implementation of a long-pending solution to Haflong's drinking water crisis. They expressed hope that the project would be completed within the stipulated timeframe and bring lasting relief to the town.
