Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy highlighted Assam's successful efforts to curb illegal mining activities as the second Northeast Mining Ministers' Conclave commenced in Guwahati on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, Reddy praised the state government's decisive action against unauthorised mining operations, positioning it as a model for other northeastern states to follow.
"The Assam government has stopped illegal mining in the state," Reddy stated, emphasising the importance of legitimate mining practices in the region's development. The minister outlined the central government's commitment to strengthening what he termed the "Ashtalakshmi states" of the northeast under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
The conclave, organised by the Ministry of Mines under the theme "Empowering the North East through Sustainable Mining," brought together senior officials and ministers from mining departments across all northeastern states. Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey also attended the gathering.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma used the platform to underline the region's untapped mineral wealth potential. He argued that proper exploration could transform the northeast into a significant economic hub, urging states to collaborate closely with the central government rather than remain dependent on external support.
Reddy noted the substantial infrastructure development the region has witnessed over the past 11 years, citing Modi's more than 60 visits to the northeast as evidence of the government's sustained focus on the area's growth.
The minister emphasised the Mining and Coal Ministry's dedication to encouraging northeastern states to develop their mining sectors responsibly, balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
