Assam: Health crisis hits Sribhumi protest as two home guards collapse during hunger strike

The indefinite hunger strike staged by over a hundred home guards in Sribhumi district took a grim turn late Wednesday, June 25 night after two protesters collapsed due to deteriorating health conditions. The two were swiftly shifted to the Sribhumi Civil Hospital for medical attention.

The protest, which began earlier in the day, was launched to press for several long-pending demands, most notably the regularisation of their employment. Protesters have alleged negligence on the part of district health authorities in responding to the emergency.

Despite reportedly informing the Joint Director of the Sribhumi Health Department in advance, the home guards claimed that no ambulance was made available at the dharna site when the medical emergency occurred.

“What if someone dies here? Will the authorities still remain indifferent?” a protester questioned, highlighting what they view as the administration’s apathetic response.

Undeterred by the health scare, the home guards have vowed to continue their hunger strike until their demands are addressed.

Protesters maintain that their movement will persist until a written assurance is given by the government on the permanent appointment and welfare measures for home guards, who often serve under precarious working conditions.
