Assam: High alert in Bongaigaon as Aie River crosses danger level mark, locals demand river dam with immediate effect

The swollen Aie river flowing through Lower Assam's Bongaigaon district is causing nightmares for its residents as there is a fear of an impending erosion and subsequent flooding.

Hundreds of families in the Manikpur area of Assam’s Bongaigaon are now spending sleepless nights.

Residents of the No. 2 Bakhbari neighbourhood have recently stepped up and demanded a river dam following their concern over the impending erosion posed by the Aie River.

The Aie river, which flows through the district, has swallowed up many villages such as Kirtanpara, Golapara, Banglapara, Chakla, and Nambarpara, taking hundreds of families into the streets.

It needs mention here that Assam minister Pijush Hazarika reached the area and promised to construct the river dam, according to the locals.

But it is a matter of regret that to date, ministers, MLAs, MPs and officials have not taken any action to prevent erosion in Bashbari no. 2 area.

But now with the monsoon approaching, there is panic among thousands of families in the larger areas under Manikpur and Srijangram revenue circles of north Abhayapuri constituency.

Especially in Bashbari No. 2, these poor families have got government houses and are working on the construction of houses like this, but there is a fear of erosion in their minds.

Locals of the Bakhbari area are now questioning the authorities if they are willing to prevent erosion before the monsoon or like last year, the foundation of thousands of families will be submerged in the river this year too.
