The temple's refurbishment is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitions to enhance holy sites.
 

The Maa Kamakhya temple is one of the oldest and most renowned shrines of the goddess Kamakhya, as well as one of the oldest Shakti Peethas.
 

The temple is particularly well-known for the Ambubachi Mela, an annual event commemorating the goddess' menstruation.
