Assam: Illegal cattle slaughter alleged at Nagaon's Balugutia market, residents seek action
Allegations of large-scale illegal cattle slaughter and the open sale of banned meat have emerged from Balugutia Market in Juria, in Assam’s Nagaon district, with local residents questioning the effectiveness of police action against the alleged activities.
According to residents, around 10 to 12 cattle are allegedly slaughtered and sold every day along the main road near the market. They have also claimed that most of the animals involved are stolen cattle, although the allegations have not been independently verified.
The alleged activity has triggered resentment among some Hindu residents and people travelling through the area. Locals have called on the administration to investigate the matter and take appropriate action against those involved if the allegations are established.
Residents have also raised concerns over the response of Juria police, alleging that occasional operations have failed to stop the reported slaughter and sale of beef.
According to locals, butchers allegedly move away with the meat when police personnel arrive. They claim that the sale resumes along the main road after the police leave the area.
The allegations have prompted residents to question why the reported activities have continued despite police intervention. Some have raised suspicions of a possible understanding between police personnel and those involved in the alleged illegal trade, but no evidence establishing such an arrangement has been provided.
Residents said they wanted the administration to clarify why the alleged activities had not been stopped and demanded effective enforcement of the law.
They have urged the district administration and police authorities to look into the allegations, verify the source of the cattle and take appropriate legal action wherever violations are found.
